A variety that is making quite an impact these days as a stand-alone varietal. And it seems that this cooler Margaret River vintage has suited this variety rather well, bringing a degree of elegance and refinement into the mix. Perfumed red fruits with a subtle leafy influence and a trace of liqueur chocolate. The palate is seamlessly integrated and medium...

Talisman Malbec 2021
Malbec
This is a small volume production, but it is always one of my favourites from Talisman. Loads of dark chocolate coat the primary blackcurrant with the rhubarb pie character. The tannins are remarkably smooth as they support the supple rich and quite luscious palate. Strikes a nice oak and fruit balance with those tannins lurking in the background.

Singlefile Great Southern Malbec 2022
Malbec
You're getting a decent bang for your buck with this cracking malbec. Immediately, the deep dark colour is evident. Then the nose delivers a mass of dark chocolate, blackberry and spices. The palate is soft and supple with succulent fruit showing typical malbec juiciness. Plenty to chew on here. A real crowd pleaser.

Rockcliffe Single Site Malbec 2021
Malbec
A most elegant and refined malbec reflecting this cooler year. The aromas are a merging of jubey rhubarb and raspberry with a plummy slightly blueberry nuance. The palate is deliciously appealing with plush red fruits and a wrap of chalky limestone tannin and fine oak. A subtle finishing touch of mocha and subtle coffee grounds completes a very nice wine.

Swan Valley
Riverbank Estate Bossman Malbec Shiraz 2017
Malbec
This is 80% malbec with the rest shiraz. It is a combination of fruit from Donnybrook, where ripe generosity is a feature, and the Swan Valley which brings a generous softness. It was treated with kid gloves that included hand plunging in small open fermenters and pressing into new oak. Has a powerful opulence about it from the intense driving...

Marq Epiq Malbec 2021
Malbec
This cooler vintage seems to have suited malbec from this single site in Wilyabrup. It's resulted in a wine that combines elegance with the essential red fruit characteristics of malbec. It's generous but stylishly restrained with a grainy gravelly tannin structure supporting the red fruit and dark chocolate combination on the palate. Has an appealing chewy finish.

Jarrah Ridge Private Release Malbec 2016
Malbec
The extra time in bottle has certainly helped this Frankland River sourced malbec start to show what it's made of. The aromas are a combination of blue and red fruits with some nice leafy lifts. The palate is soft and beautifully supple showing excellent fine tannin and subtle oak integration. Captures the variety really well.

House Of Cards Songbird Malbec 2022
Malbec
Yet another of the superb malbecs being made in WA these days. In this case it was fermented and aged in a concrete egg and subsequently bottled without fining of filtering. The approach has produced a wine of purity and integrity that is a true unhindered representation of the vineyard. Bright and bursting with plush flavours. It's a cracker.

Hamelin Bay Rampant Red 2022
Malbec
This is mostly shiraz with smaller contributions from malbec and cabernet. This was a riper warmer year, yet the cooler southern Margaret River region results in a pretty wine of medium body. Delicious, sweet plummy fruit flavours balanced with a little spice and a savouriness on the finish. Nice tight core of chalky tannin and understated oak.

Grace Farm Malbec 2021
Malbec
Shows what can be achieved in a cooler season with this variety. It's all been wild fermented with regular hand plunging before pressing to oak for 14 months. It's a lighter bodied style but the red juby and slightly raspberry favours emerge with a thread of chalky tannin and oak in support.

Ferngrove Black Label Malbec 2022
Malbec
The 2021 was very good, but this one is so much the improved version. Vintage has played a big part. It captures everything you want in this variety, and then some. Vibrant juicy red fruits with a little rhubarb pie for a finishing dessert. BlackBerry and juicy plum bring further interest into the palate. The tannins are firm and chalky...

Drakesbrook Wild Bird Malbec 2014
Malbec
I saw tis a few years ago and in the ensuing years it has developed rather well to be drinking right in its sweet spot now. Blackberry fruit, chocolate and ripe plums all feature in a deep palate intensity. Delivers with medium weight striking a neat oak and tannin balance.

Clandestine Vineyards Malbec 2021
Malbec
Clandestine has made a statement with this variety since forming a few years ago. This is another very good one. Deep bright colour speaks malbec, then the juicy bright red fruits of the variety start their thing. It's had a decent hits of one and two year old oak over 20 months, but it's gobbled it up so the fruit...

Capel Vale Debut Malbec 2022
Malbec
One of an increasing number of straight malbecs emerging from the State's cellars. This soft and generously presented malbec brimming with all those plush red fruits and rhubarb delivers plenty. A spicy licorice edge adds complexity to the finish. A beautiful example of this often-underrated variety.

Cape Grace Basket Pressed Malbec 2022
Malbec
This small batch production is always one of my favourites. It's made in traditional fashion with open fermentation and hand plunging which suits the soft red fruits. The palate is medium bodied but with beautiful blackberry and subtle blue fruits with a trace of mulberry. Such a vibrant and vital wine ideal in the short term but with some ageing...

Bright high energy malbec from Margaret River. I have found this cooler vintage has been ideal for malbec, allowing the perfumed aromatics to emerge while creating such refined and elegant palate structures. Lots of bright red fruit with a sweet middle palate that is offering such wonderfully appealing drinking. I like to drink this style of wine while it is...
